A Budgetary Control Committee delegation visited Slovakia from 26-28 May to assess the use of EU funds and measures to protect EU financial interests.

The delegation was led by Tomáš Zdechovský (EPP, CZ), and included Ondřej Knotek (PfE, CZ), Michal Wiezik (Renew, SK), and Daniel Freund (Greens/EFA, DE).

“We visited Slovakia because we have been receiving alarming reports of the alleged misuse of EU funds and violations involving individuals connected to Slovakia’s governments. Over the past three days, we have held thorough and very frank debates with various stakeholders, including national bodies in charge of ensuring proper use of EU funds,” head of the Budgetary Control Committee delegation Tomáš Zdechovský said.

“This was a mission to control how EU funds are being spent in Slovakia. However, I must admit that the mission did not adequately alleviate our concerns. We will now communicate our findings to other MEPs and decide how to proceed. Let me assure you that the European Parliament will use all its tools to protect EU taxpayer money, so that they can be spent for the benefit of Slovakia and its citizens,” Mr Zdechovský added.

“We want Slovakia to get back on track being a decisive player in central Europe with a thriving economy and prosperous population. EU funds are designed precisely for that, to finance long-term investments that will help the country become more resilient, more competitive and better prepared for future challenges,” Mr Zdechovský explained.

“Slovak farmers, regions, hospitals, schools, minorities, entrepreneurs, NGOs, and other beneficiaries must be guaranteed equal and fair access to the money that can make them and their country succeed. We simply want EU funds to reach those for whom they are intended,” Mr Zdechovský added.
