REGI Committee Chair's statement on the floods in Spain
The floods in several Spanish Mediterranean regions are of unprecedented intensity and have had devastating effects on the populations living in these territories.
The Chair of the Committee on Regional Development (REGI) Mr. Dragoş Benea said:
“I would like to express my sincere condolences to the families of the victims and the full support of the REGI Committee to the affected people, the local and regional authorities and to the emergency services.
The escalating frequency and severity of natural disasters across the EU demand immediate action to protect our citizens. More than ever, recent natural disasters across many EU countries, including Spain, underscore the critical urgency of adopting the Commission’s RESTORE proposal – Regional Emergency Support to Reconstruction. Thus, affected Member States and regions will be supported and equipped to meet urgent needs, mitigate the socio-economic consequences of natural disasters, and strengthen resilience against future climate-related risks. This includes offering essential support, such as health care, food, and basic material assistance, as well as financing short-time work schemes for the benefit of employees and self-employed individuals affected by natural disasters. Furthermore, their reconstruction efforts in response to natural disasters will also be supported including the restoration of damaged or destroyed infrastructure, such as public facilities, and investments in fixed capital for businesses and equipment.
The REGI committee reaffirms its commitment to support member states, regions, and citizens affected by natural disasters.“
